Landscape Painting Made Easy

2019

The work examines how the conventions of landscape painting can be translated into computational form. A projected landscape is gradually constructed through ASCII characters generated and displayed by custom software, replacing brushstrokes and canvas with code and projection. The installation’s audio combines a programmed voice giving instructions for painting a traditional oil landscape with another voice reading the ASCII characters that compose the digital image. Through this parallel process, the work places traditional painting and computation in direct relation, treating code as both material and image-making gesture.
